I don't like water that I can't see the bottom of. I don't like the idea of what could be underneath me - maybe my imagination is too strong. If I were sinking to the bottom of the sea, the last thing I would want to see is a giant fish coming towards me. But when Jonah is swallowed by such a fish, it is an act of rescue, not destruction.
